ESD Future City Competition
NTH Staff sent Keith Bryan, Wai Kit Chan, Lisa Dilg, and Bill Reader to be judges for the Best Engineered Project category. There were a lot of great projects, but we narrowed it down to Crescent Academy in Canton. NTH Engineer, Dave Lomas, was also a judge for the final round of the competition.
NTH supplied a basket of Michigan made products and Red Wings hockey tickets for a raffle fundraiser for The Heat & Warmth Fund which gives utility assistance for Michigan residents in need.
Several NTH employees also generously donated directly to the online website.
Flint Water Help
Thanks to the generosity of our staff members, NTH collected 65 gallons of water and donated $170.00 cash, $80.00 of which came from our Cleveland office! We used the money to purchase Zero water pitchers along with packs filter replacements.

NTH Consultants is proud to once again support the The Heat and Warmth fund - a 501C3 charitable organization that provides emergency energy assistance to Michigan households in need. THAW is funded by government grants as well as foundation, public, and corporate support.
Since 1985, DTE Energy has partnered with The Heat and Warmth Fund (THAW) to raise funds to provide energy assistance to low-income families, seniors, and individuals in the Michigan area. Despite a slowly improving economy, thousands of individuals and families still struggle to pay their energy bills. In that time THAW has distributed more than $145 million dollars in assistance to over 200,000 Michigan households with approximately 8,000 of those families in the Detroit area. More than 30,000 children lived in homes that received THAW assistance in 2013.
In an effort to provide assistance to these vulnerable families, THAW announced the 3rd annual Waffles for Warmth Challenge, a DTE Energy fundraising competition for employees from January 26th through February 10 in conjunction with THAW's Winter Survival Radio-thon.
The Radio-thon will be taking place February 12 on WWJ News Radio 950. WWJ Newsradio 950 will broadcast LIVE on from 5 a.m. – 7 p.m., to help raise much-needed funds for THAW. Listen in to bid on great gifts, including our Michigan "mitten" basket filled with Michigan made products, NTH swag and two tickets to an upcoming Red Wings game! (Pictured below.)
Last year THAW successfully raised $127,000 collectively beating their goal of $120,000 which DTE triple matched. This year's collective funding goal is $150,000. Funds raised go directly to THAW to distribute to those families and individuals in need. THAW distributed $25 million and providing energy assistance to 20,000 Michigan homes in 2015. Online giving can be donated here and a receipt for your tax deductible donation will automatically be emailed.
Please consider supporting this year's fundraiser to be a force for growth and prosperity in the communities where we live and serve!

If you have ever attended one of NTH's engineering-related webinars you may think we've been doing them for a long time. This is not true! The webinar program actually started just recently, in 2011, as a test within the NTH marketing department. Our first webinar generated nine attendees, but has continued to grow and change over the past four years - now each webinar has on average 300 - 400 attendees.
Within the engineering industry, this type of programming a great way to reach many colleagues, clients and other engineers to educate them on a variety of topics. We also offer professional development hour (PDH) certificates for each of our webinars which many need for their continuing education.
Below is a quick summary of NTH’s 2015 webinar success:
In 2015, we hosted webinars regarding the new CCR rule, Air Quality Dispersion Modeling, Green Infrastructure and more. Two of our most popular webinars were called "Real Life Engineering" where those already tenured in the engineering field gave real world advice to attendees.
This year we have some great webinars planned as well with our first, Michigan Road Funding, scheduled for February 10. This webinar will break down the details of the package of bills that was passed and explain how the new revenue will be generated and where it will be spent. The webinar will also explain other requirements contained in the legislation including warranties, improved pavement designs, new competitive bidding requirements and much more.
More information will be out on this soon, but if you want to stay informed of our upcoming events, or view some of our past webinars (you can get PDHs for watching past ones as well!) please visit our webinar page here.
We hope to see you in 2016!
NTH Consultants, Ltd. would like to congratulate David A. Lomas, P.E., QEP, D.WRE on his latest accomplishment - becoming a Certified Project Management Professional. Mr. Lomas has been formally evaluated for demonstrated experience, knowledge, and performance in achieving an organizational objective through defining and overseeing projects and resources.
The PMP is recognized by organizations worldwide and according to the Project Management Institute, "the PMP credential demonstrates to employers, clients and colleagues that a project manager possesses project management knowledge, experience and skills to bring projects to successful completion. As the demand for skilled project managers is at a critically urgent level, practitioners who hold the PMP credential are well positioned to provide the professional skills necessary to lead project teams and achieve successful project results. The PMP recognizes the competence of an individual to perform in the role of a project manager, specifically experience in leading and directing projects."
Mr. Lomas passed the test to become a Project Management Professional on 12/21/15.
One of the services NTH provides is Civil-Site Design. Our Civil-Design team consists of degreed civil engineers (all on track for professional engineering licensure in the next year) completing engineering analysis and design as it relates to site development. Got a green site where a new office complex needs to go? Maybe an existing industrial site that is being retrofitted for a new use? It all starts with the Civil-Site design! Initial topographic survey, site layout, traffic turning movements, grading, cut-fill analysis, utility layout and design…our Civil-Site Design can analyze these elements and develop contract documents to detail the design.
Land developers face many constraints as they plan the utilization of their property. Municipal planning ordinances which prescribe building coverage ratios, setbacks, and parking requirements affect site layout, as well as conservation of natural resources such as woodlands and wetlands. Storm water management requirements and the location of the storm water outlet also impact site planning. The Civil-Site Design group has the experience to work with developers and public agencies to optimize utilization of a site. We utilize the latest software design packages including AutoCAD Civil 3D, Auto Turn, and Storm and Sanitary Analysis, to accurately and efficiently design-out the site. We can convert the approved site plan into engineering construction plans and specifications to be used for permitting, bidding and construction. Contract documents typically include soil erosion control plans and specifications, traffic control plans, demolition plans, utility plans, layout plans, and grading plans.
Our group has extensive experience designing roads and underground utilities, including water supply, sanitary sewers, pump stations and storm water management facilities. We have designed Low Impact Development (LID) infrastructure including green infrastructure elements such as rain gardens, bioswales, and permeable pavements. We can also prepare permit applications for local and state approval and are routinely involved in the construction administration process including probable cost opinion preparation, review of project submittals / contractor payment applications, and verification of material/ workmanship compliance with project specifications.
NTH Consultants, Ltd. would like to congratulate Rhiana Dornbos on becoming our latest Professional Engineer! Rhiana works in the Air Quality Group at NTH and is based in our Grand Rapids office.
She survived the 8 hour PE exam in environmental and civil engineering in October, and received the good news in December.
In November of 2013, NTH Consultants, Ltd. was retained as the prime consultant by the Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner’s Office to conduct an investigation into the cause of a sinkhole that developed in Southfield, Michigan. NTH’s analysis lead to a repair effort to stabilize the undermined foundations of the culvert and floor of the box sections that carry the drain beneath the service drive of Northwestern Highway (M-10) in Southfield, Michigan.
NTH’s unique contribution to the project was the inspection team’s discovery that the natural soil bottom within the portion of the culvert that extends beneath the MDOT ROW was eroded due to flow conditions within the drain. NTH was able to quickly identify that the discharge from these pipes projected away from the culvert walls in a jet that struck the channel bottom within the culvert. Because the pipes are connected to the roadway surface drainage system and convey flow from relatively nearby catch basins and other stormwater management structures, during short, intense precipitation events the maximum discharge from the pipes likely would occur before maximum flow is reached. Accordingly, the water depth within the culvert could remain relatively shallow and not provide much “cushion/dissipation” for the jets from the two pipes, leading to erosion of the channel bottom.
Through NTH’s quick response, planning and action, the team was able to:
This project demonstrates a practical approach to addressing scouring and loss of support beneath culvert footings of similar construction. Because a similar design approach was used at other locations along Northwestern Highway and elsewhere, it is possible that this type of repair may be required elsewhere along the highway. In addition, it appears that since similar design was common for other MDOT projects built in the same time frame, routine inspection of such culverts is necessary, and similar repairs may be required on many other roadways throughout the state.
