After more than 33 years of service, Ernie Dumas is hanging up his NTH hard hat and embarking on a new phase in his life – retirement. As we celebrate this well-earned milestone with Ernie, we look back at his journey with NTH and the legacy he leaves.

Ernie began his NTH career in 1987 and progressed through the years to become NTH’s most esteemed and skilled Service Technician. He earned the trust of all he worked with throughout the organization and became the “go to guy” for everything construction services. There was not a construction services project that came along he could not do. Clients frequently asked for him.

Ernie left his mark on numerous projects in and around Detroit, including signature landmarks like the Dearborn CSO, all new Detroit stadiums - Comerica Park, Ford Field, and Little Caesars Arena, as well as the Gordie Howe International Bridge.

“We are very fortunate  to have had a  professional of Ernie’s caliber as a member of the NTH team for more than three decades! His legacy lives on in the work ethic, professionalism and skills imparted to staff he has mentored through the years.”  - Kevin B. Hoppe, President | CEO
Over the years, his unwavering work ethic exuded the NTH commitment to quality and professionalism and set an example for all to follow. He was on the job, on time, every day, putting in whatever level of effort was required. From showing up in the middle of the night to working 16 hour or more shifts, to the coldest or hottest days of the year, Ernie never ushered a single complaint.

Embracing opportunities to pass along his knowledge and professionalism, Ernie trained a significant number of younger staff over the years, demonstrating the quality way of performing tasks and supporting them until they felt comfortable on their own. He always went the extra mile to answer questions about a construction project and/or related tasks in a detailed, methodical, and understandable way.

Colleagues at all levels within the organization resoundingly reflected upon Ernie’s professionalism, poise and up-beat approach to every situation, no matter how difficult.  His calm demeanor always wore off on the client and / or the contractor so that problems could be solved in a collaborative rather than adversarial manner.

Ernie’s impact on NTH is summed up eloquently by esteemed colleague, Larry Gilbert: “Ernie is a respected and able veteran of the construction world, cheerful in all weather, never shirked a task, as dependable as a close friend, and a professional by every definition – he is a difficult guy to replace and he leaves behind a legacy worth emulating.”

Please leave a comment for Ernie below, giving him your well wishes, telling a story about him, or letting him know he will be missed!

Ernie we only met in person a couple times in person but your reputation far preceded you. I cannot count the number of times contractors find out I'm from NTH and they were asking about you and how you are doing. You've absolutely had a great impact on NTH reputation and I've only heard great things about you from the contractors who know you. Clearly you've earned a good retirement and you will be sorely missed in the construction industry here in metro Detroit. Congratulations!

Ernie, we are going to miss your smiling face at the Associate's Meetings. I personally will miss talking and commiserating about the Detroit Lions over the years! Congratulations, enjoy your time off and don't forget to stop by when the Lions go to the playoffs. I was going to say Super Bowl, but that may be a while yet.

Ernie, you worked way too hard for an office-worker like me to get to know you very well! But, it's been great having you as a colleague all these years - when I did get to see you, I enjoyed your smile and upbeat attitude! I hope you enjoy your retirement years!

WOW, I can't believe it's time for you to hang up your hard hat and boots. We've worked on a lot of projects over the years together and it was always a pleasure working with you. I imagine you get a smile on your face whenever you drive around metro Detroit and see all the projects you were involved with. We will miss your smile around the office (on those rare times you actually got to visit during the day).
You will have to let me know what to expect when I get to follow you in a few years! I wish you the best.
