Environmental and Geotechnical Engineering Services
Redevelopment of an urban renewal brownfield site in Downtown Detroit demanded extensive expertise and aggressive innovation. NTH was called out of the engineering “bench” long before the first construction equipment rolled on-site to assist with pre-acquisition due diligence studies as well as preliminary engineering and cost estimating. The challenge was to identify and evaluate potential environmental problems or recognized environmental conditions (RECs) at over 100 tax parcels, ranging from dilapidated residences to former light industrial operations. All eyes turned to NTH to clear environmental hurdles and keep the project rolling. NTH applied practical geo-environmental expertise, keen regulatory understanding, and emergency response services to minimize delays and adhere to the project schedule. 

Inner Circle - Joe Louis Greenway
​Transformation of Abandoned Railroad Corridor into Recreational Trail
NTH was selected to provide a variety of environmental, geotechnical, and civil engineering consulting services to the City of Detroit for the Inner Circle / Joe Louis Greenway project a 27.5 mile pathway that provides a safe loop around the city and connects Dearborn, Hamtramck and Highland Park. The project entails new trails, on-street bike lanes and links to existing trails. NTH’s expertise was instrumental in conducting due diligence and developing a plan for complying with continuing obligations for the proposed Joe Louis Greenway. NTH is proud be contributing to this transformational project that links Detroit neighborhoods previously separated by freeways and other obstacles and revitalizes them with a family-friendly, multi-use path. 

City of Detroit - Multi-Property Acquisition
​Environmental Due Diligence Services
The City of Detroit intended to acquire multiple properties from Detroit Public Schools, however, school buildings have historically used hazardous materials. To protect the city from liability from historical environmental contamination during this property transaction, it was necessary to complete environmental investigations to assess the site. NTH’s decades of experience in performing due diligence services for complicated property transactions benefited the city during this large property transaction. NTH was able to fast track these services by simultaneously working on multiple properties at the same time. NTH provided Phase I and Phase II ESAs, Hazardous Materials Surveys, and Baseline Environmental Assessments / Due Care Plans at 19 former schools.

​Environmental Engineering Compliance Services
NTH’s environmental engineering and compliance personnel have provided routine and as-needed environmental engineering and regulatory compliance services to the city since 2018. NTH coordinates the efforts of sampling crews and laboratories for both routine and as-needed analyses and completes the statistical evaluation and reporting to ensure regulatory requirements are satisfied. Our professionals have completed demolition assistance compliance, asbestos and other hazardous materials identification and abatement procedures along with contaminated soil testing, groundwater sampling, industrial sanitary sewer discharge sampling and wetland delineation and reporting for the city.

Environmental, health and safety compliance are a top priority for GLWA, and NTH has assisted them with protecting employees and meeting regulatory obligations for decades. Currently, NTH’s multidisciplinary team provides a one-stop destination for GLWA to obtain environmental, health and safety consulting services. NTH’s deep institutional knowledge honed through decades of work at the authority’s facilities provides unique insight on potential issues and cost-effective solutions.

Since 2009, NTH has been providing hazardous materials abatement and demolition services to nine different buildings for Livonia Public Schools (LPS). NTH’s knowledge and expertise on demolition projects has been invaluable in assisting LPS in completing environmental and demolition projects within established schedule and budget. As such, LPS continues to trust NTH to provide their superior environmental and engineering consulting services on various projects throughout the school district.
