Celebrating Our Long History With DTE Energy

As one of our very first clients, NTH is privileged to have worked with DTE Energy for more than 50 years. Since our first project, for what was then Detroit Edison at their St. Clair Power Plant, we have continued to build on our professional relationships throughout DTE and have grown together, providing services for the common good of the communities where we live. We would just like to say thank you to DTE for being a part of our family and are very grateful for their continued patronage. Below is a profile of our relationship with DTE highlighting the services we've provided over the last 50 years.

NTH Participates in MSU 'Introduce a Girl to Engineering' Event

As part of the NTH Volunteer Time Off Program (VTO), Anastasia Matta, staff engineer, participated in the “Introduce a Girl to Engineering” event at Michigan State University. This event brings together female students, grades 4 through 8, from schools around the state to participate in various engineering activities. Anastasia participated with Dr. Matta’s team on the “Watershed Recovery” event.This was the 6th year the team has held this event, and Anastasia’s 6th time participating in this event.

The event objective of the “Watershed Recovery” event is for participants to reinforce a model riverbank to prevent erosion and flooding along the riverbank and protect nearby houses during a rain event. Participants used various tools, such as popsicle sticks, burlap, rubber “tires”, rocks, and trees, to support the riverbanks. Once the participants finished reinforcing their model riverbanks, their work was tested with a “rain event” - pouring a liter of water to test their design.

This event has been popular with participants year after year, and this year was no different. This event gives the participants the opportunity to get their hands dirty and have fun, all while learning a little about what engineers can do to help protect the environment and those who live around it!

NTH Teams Win Engineering Eminent Conceptor and Engineering Honorable Conceptor Awards

NTH Consultants, Ltd. (NTH) is proud to announce that the design team consisting of WSP Michigan Inc., HNTB Michigan, Inc., Mannik & Smith Group, Inc. and NTH, won the ACEC/M Engineering Eminent Conceptor award, the most prestigious honor in the competition, for the American Center for Mobility Project (ACM) in Ann Arbor. NTH also secured an Engineering Honorable Conceptor Award for its project, “Using HDD to Mitigate Sinkhole Risks project in Southfield.” Both awards were presented at the 2019 American Council of Engineering Companies of Michigan (ACEC/M) Engineering and Surveying Excellence Awards on March 2, 2019 and both were also nominated for the ACEC national award competition.

The ACM is a non-profit testing, education and product development facility for future mobility, designed to enable safe validation and self-certification of connected and automated vehicle technology, and to accelerate the development of voluntary standards. The project included utilizing re-purposed MDOT right-of-way along US-12 to complete the approximately 3-mile highway loop, development of a boulevard and urban corridor, a 700’ roadway tunnel, and deployment of connected technologies. NTH staff, led by Brad Venman and Bhushan Modi, assisted with property redevelopment, planning, and design details, and helped to ensure compliance with the Declaration of Restrictive Covenants (DRCs) requirements and ongoing affirmative obligations (due care activities) for management of environmental risks.

NTH’s Engineering Honorable Conceptor Award win was for their work on the Telegraph / Franklin Sewer Replacement Project. Following a water main break which revealed a large sinkhole and 48” sanitary sewer, NTH was retained to lead a design-build emergency rehabilitation. Based on several field challenges, a 350-foot, 30-inch HDPE pipe using Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) technology along with a Pilot Tube Guided Boring Machine (GBM) was selected for repair of the sewer. The 48” sewer and other impacted sewers were restored and the sinkhole area stabilized without impacting existing utilities, structures, and the highway.

The Owner selected DVM Utilities, Inc. (DVM) as the contractor to replace the collapsed sewer. Their experience and expertise in HDD and innovative construction methods allowed the team to utilize a low-cost construction method within extremely tight constraints and tolerances.
