NTH Facilitates RNG HAZOP in Grand Rapids
“NTH’s attentiveness to detail and review of the RNG design process has helped our project team arrive at relevant design outcomes that impact the safety and success of each unique project.”
Last month, NTH facilitated a hazard and operability study (“HAZOP”) for one of our Renewable Natural Gas (“RNG”) clients for an expansion at their dairy RNG facility in Michigan. The Michigan-based dairy RNG facility is at the forefront of renewable energy innovation. By converting dairy manure into biomethane (RNG) through anaerobic digestion and advanced gas upgrading, the facility produces a near-pure methane product that seamlessly integrates into the natural gas pipeline. This process not only reduces waste but also offers a low-carbon alternative to conventional natural gas, supporting state and federal renewable fuel standards.
Enhancing Safety Through HAZOP Format
A HAZOP study is a structured and systematic walk-through of a complex process during the design phase of a new project to identify potential hazards and operability issues before they become problems. Over the course of one week, NTH experts worked closely with the engineering team, operators, and vendors in a hybrid in-person and virtual format, ensuring seamless collaboration across all stakeholders.
Leading the charge were:
- Steve Innes, P.E., CHMM, who facilitated the sessions and guided the project team through detailed process hazard analysis, tackling potential risks valve by valve.
- Eric Marko, P.E., who managed project coordination and logistics, ensuring a smooth and successful experience for all involved.
- Abby Brandstatter, EIT, who provided crucial preparation, documentation, and support, keeping the sessions organized and results actionable.
The study focused on “what-if” scenarios to proactively address potential hazards, strengthening safeguards to protect workers, the environment, and the surrounding community. As part of our ongoing mission, NTH helps RNG owners and operators navigate compliance with MiOSHA’s Process Safety Management and the EPA’s Risk Management Program, helping clients mitigate risks and maintain regulatory standards.
