Pack Your Back is a nonprofit organization that was started at Central Michigan University by a few students who decided that they wanted to be hands on and proactive in helping the younger generation succeed. After volunteering in Flint during the water crisis, the group discussed how they could continue to give back to the community in Flint. They settled on collecting and donating school supplies, as they realized that the water crisis had a massive impact on the development of young school-aged children.
The CMU students and alumni started Pack Your Back in March 2016 and were officially approved as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in May. They set to work collecting funds and school supplies to donate to the children of Flint and beyond. The organization plans to extend to the rest of the state and even the country in the following months and years and already has an expansion plan in place.
As part of this expansion, Pack Your Back was in Detroit, Michigan this year for a school supply distribution at the Detroit Public Library. Pack Your Back partnered with the Masco Corporation, NTH Consultants, and the Detroit Public Library to bring school supplies to hundreds of Detroit school children.
Pack Your Back relies on the kind donations from the community and various businesses in order to provide resources for children to succeed in the classroom. Since there are always more children in need, Pack Your Back is always looking for donations to continue providing students with resources. In addition to donations of backpacks and other school supplies, the Pack Your Back movement is relying on sponsorships from local businesses and organizations to fund the cause.
