NTH CONSULTANTS, LTD. WINS ACEC EMINENT CONCEPTOR AWARD
Cobo Arena Demolition & Reconstruction Project Receives Top Honors
NTH Consultants, Ltd. (NTH) today announced that its work on the redevelopment of Cobo Arena in Detroit, Michigan has been recognized with the ACEC/Michigan’s highest honor, the Eminent Conceptor Award for Engineering, presented during the recent ACEC/Michigan’s 50th Anniversary Awards Gala.
ACEC/Michigan recognizes special engineering and surveying accomplishments through its annual Engineering & Surveying Excellence Awards. The statewide competition identifies engineering achievements that demonstrate a high degree of client satisfaction through innovative, cost-effective solutions.
NTH received its ACEC award for the Cobo Arena Expansion Project that began in 2010 when the Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority (DRCFA) assumed the ambitious transformation of the existing Cobo Arena facility. The signature element in the transformation was the construction of a new three-story atrium opening to the Detroit River and the conversion of Cobo Arena into a glass-enclosed banquet and event space. DRCFA chose NTH for the planning, work sequencing, and evaluation of structural integrity.
During the redevelopment of Cobo Arena, NTH utilized the shell-like geometry of the original structure, performed detailed analyses for each stage of demolition and reconstruction, and worked with the contractors, Homrich, Inc. and Midwest Steel, Inc., to safely sequence the work, thereby eliminating the need for internal temporary bracing. This transformation of an underutilized component of Detroit’s past stands as a testament to the fortitude of its people, the community, and the professionals dedicated to its rebirth.
ACEC also recognized NTH with a 2015 Merit Award for its work in averting future sinkholes during its work on the Oakland Macomb Interceptor Drain Project.
