Geotechnical engineering is the foundation of all constructed facilities. Performed competently, it confirms that projects are appropriately designed – mitigating excessive costs associated with over-design, and preventing failures caused by under-design.

NTH takes great pride in our geotechnical engineering abilities. We understand the criticality of obtaining and making effective use of reliable and accurate subsurface data. NTH provides engineering services for transportation facilities such as highways, bridges, local roads, culverts, and auxiliary structures, such as overhead signs, intelligent transportation system infrastructure, and traffic signals. We have also provided geotechnical engineering services for airports, rail and light rail systems, and marine and docking facilities.

Our geotechnical engineering services are grounded in an understanding of the complex interaction between earth materials and facilities constructed on the earth.

Our clients call on us because we have trained and experienced personnel in the area of geotechnical engineering, engineering geology, hydrogeology, and soil mechanics.

During our extensive subsurface evaluation process, the NTH team:
  • Collects subsurface data by means of test borings, test pits, observation wells, geophysics, and other procedures appropriate for the project and the geologic setting.
  • Determines the relevant physical properties of the subsurface materials in our soil mechanics laboratory.
  • Utilizes proven state-of-the-art computer programs tempered by sound.
  • professional judgment to determine how the subsurface conditions will impact the project.
  • Formulates a determination of constructability and cost effectiveness.

In addition to traditional geotechnical engineering services, NTH provides specialized services on transportation projects including analysis, oversight and evaluation of dynamic and static load testing of deep foundation elements, geotechnical instrumentation, precondition surveys, and vibration monitoring.
