Geotechnical Engineering Services

You stand on it, walk on it, and drive on it everyday, taking for granted that the ground beneath you is solid, safe, and sound. However, the earth is a complex system made up of carefully balanced forces and materials, and integrating each site's unique geotechnical characteristics is key to the success of your project.

Whether planning a new structure, monitoring and maintaining current underground infrastructure, or repairing damaged subsurface facilities, NTH provides unparalleled expertise. We began as a geotechnical engineering firm over 53 years ago, and since that time, have helped our clients overcome diverse and difficult challenges, often achieving award-winning results.
Our geotechnical veterans understand that the key to a successful project has always been, and will continue to be, constructability. NTH professionals have designed tunnels and other underground projects, provided field engineering during construction, investigated failures of underground facilities – both during construction and after completion, repaired damaged facilities, and assisted contractors in the construction of new underground facilities.
NTH specializes in Geotechnical Engineering Services
such as:

Construction Materials & Geotechnical Testing Services
A well designed and executed quality control and quality assurance program is vitally important to assure successful construction of a project. NTH maintains fully equipped geotechnical and construction materials testing laboratories. Our extensive services include sample collection, field and laboratory testing, and preparation of closure certification documents.

Underground Engineering Services
Underground engineering, including design and construction of new facilities and repair of existing facilities, requires in-depth, specialized knowledge and years of experience to deliver successful projects.  Underground engineering continues to be one of NTH's core strengths.

Subsurface Utility Engineering Services
Subsurface Utility Engineering (S.U.E.) is a process that incorporates new and existing technologies, to locate and map underground utilities in the early phases of construction projects. Working in conjunction with project design personnel, NTH accurately locates existing utilities and identifies areas of potential conflict well in advance of final design and the distribution of construction bid documents.

In addition, NTH offers these services:

Project Highlight:
Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority

In 2011, the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority opened its $22 million state-of-the-art Public Dock & Terminal on the Detroit River. This 21,000-square-foot public terminal facility and 250-foot off-shore wharf can accommodate vessels of various sizes including cruise ships.

Providing engineering services, NTH, along with our subconsultants, Moffatt & Nichol and Tucker, Young, Jackson, Tull Inc., partnered with various stakeholders to develop this former industrial site, in the heart of downtown Detroit. Despite numerous challenges to develop a deep-water port, extensive cooperation with adjacent property and utility owners, the City of Detroit, Wayne County, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy and other stakeholders helped in the reclamation of the Detroit Riverfront.
