Stormwater Management
Cranbrook Educational Community retained NTH Consultants to develop a long-term
program to rehabilitate stormwater facilities to improve stormwater management
practices and the water ecology on campus.
To provide a holistic approach to this project, NTH teamed with an aquatic specialist
and a firm that specializes in assessing the botanical community, including sustainable
hydraulic consultation. This team evaluated the overall ecological picture of the
campus, not only limited to engineering aspects.

Project Approach

NTH developed a program to enhance stormwater management facilities and the
water ecology of the campus. Emphasis of the project included:
  • Protection and restoration of aquatic habitat by establishing riparian buffer strips, filter strips, and grass buffers along the tributaries of the Rouge River
  • Incorporation of advanced bio-engineering techniques
  • Improvement to flood-management strategy using best management practices (BMPs)
  • Design of wetland treatment areas to reduce non-point source pollution
  • Web-based public education, including water quality monitoring activities for students
  • Civil site design for stormwater management
NTH assisted the Cranbrook Community with successful applications for grants to the
state (Clean Michigan Initiative and 319 grants), federal agencies (Environmental
Protection Agency) and the Rouge Program Office (RPO).
