NTH Geotechnical Engineering Signature Projects
Gordie Howe International Bridge
Geotechnical Engineering Because of the accelerated project schedule, the initial challenge was to develop and execute an investigation program with more than 650 test borings and CPTs, advanced more than 37,500 ft., and prepare more than 115 geotechnical data and design reports to support the project team. NTH staff use state of the art geotechnical software to evaluate numerous technical issues, such as slope and global stability, steel and precast concrete pile foundations, and settlement and surcharging requirements to meet very strict, long-term performance requirements. |
City of Detroit
As-Needed Geotechnical Engineering NTH was awarded a two-year contract from the City of Detroit to provide as-needed geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing services for the City’s Department of Public Works. NTH provided pavement distress investigation and evaluation, bridge foundation evaluations, retaining wall evaluation, due diligence studies and other services for various bridge and road projects through this contract. |
MDOT I-275 Rehabilitation
Geotechnical Engineering The rehabilitation of I-275 included several miles of new pavement, replacement of storm sewer culverts, ramp and lane improvements, and other ancillary enhancements. NTH under its as-needed geotechnical contract with the Metro Region assisted with several aspects of this rehabilitation, including geotechnical explorations, manned-entry and CCTV inspection of existing storm sewer tunnels and drop shafts, and provided design and repair recommendations. Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB)
Feasibility Studies, Geotechnical and Construction Engineering Since 2001, NTH has been providing site feasibility studies, constructability reviews, geotechnical engineering, and construction engineering for Michigan State University in support of the FRIB facility. NTH coordinated with MSU personnel and the large design and construction team to ensure that issues were addressed and resolved in an efficient and economical manner. This includes the design and inspection of the MSE, which allowed interior building trades to begin outfitting the structure, months ahead of schedule. |
MDOT
As-Needed Subsurface Utility Engineering NTH has held a contract from MDOT for as-needed SUE services since the contract’s inception in 2015. Under this contract, NTH has performed numerous SUE investigations including Utility Quality Levels D through A, all across the State. Additionally, NTH serves on as-needed design teams for traffic signals by utilizing our subsurface utility engineering experience to assist in choosing the optimal location for traffic signal poles and to minimize the risk of costly and time consuming utility conflicts during construction. City of Lansing
As-Needed Geotechnical and Construction Engineering Since 2008, NTH has been providing as-needed geotechnical engineering and construction engineering services for the City of Lansing. NTH has provided as-needed for various types of facilities and projects, including roadways, sewer systems, parks, and other miscellaneous developments. NTH has worked seamlessly with virtually every member of the Engineering Department, as well as numerous other, local consulting partners. |
