Distribution Main Design Various Streets within the City of Detroit
NTH Consultants, Ltd. (NTH) was retained by the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) to assist in the design of a water main replacement project within the City of Detroit. The project consisted of designing about 35,000 feet of replacement distribution main varying in size from 8-inches to 12-inches in diameter through various residential and main thoroughfares within the City limits.
Project Management NTH built an experienced team to facilitate the research and design associated for the distribution main design. We performed the planning, coordination, periodic reviews, and meetings with the project team, DWSD staff, and other utility departments and jurisdictional authorities. NTH met with, and responded to, DWSD comments and continue to progress the design to final completion.
Preliminary Design NTH searched through the records of DWSD and other City Departments, and contacted various utility companies and jurisdictional authorities to secure records from them. Gathered information was strategically cataloged and referenced for ease of implementation and review as the design progresses.
Preliminary drawings were transmitted to all utility agencies for their review and comments. NTH prepared a preliminary design according to DWSD standards and is assisting with the procurement of permits to work within the right-of-way.
Field Survey, Measurement, and Investigation NTH facilitated a field investigation and tape survey in order to verify the information received from utility companies and to locate utilities for which no information was received. This survey served to resolve problems with site conditions within the street rights-of-way and easements where the water mains were to be placed. All relevant utility information that was gathered was plotted on the contract drawings.
Contract Documents At the current stage, NTH has received 80% comments on the preliminary drawings from DWSD and are progressing with the 95% submittal. These plans are being prepared to include DWSD’s review and recommendations and any changes in the plans required by utility departments. NTH also prepared a preliminary cost estimate, construction schedule and list of materials for the project. A sample of a preliminary drawing is provided at left to showcase the quality and detail of the design at this current stage.
