Great Lakes Petroleum Terminal, LLC
Bulk Liquid Asphalt Terminal

Project Overview
When Great Lakes Petroleum Terminal, LLC decided to revamp an old Owen’s Corning manufacturing/processing facility in southwest Detroit, Michigan into a state- of-the-art liquid asphalt storage and distribution terminal, NTH Consultants, Ltd. (NTH) was retained to provide a full scope of engineering and environmental services to facilitate the rehabilitation of the existing facility and the site design of the new asphalt terminal.

The original design included construction of four new above ground storage tanks totaling 10.36 million gallons. GLPT has expanded twice, adding an additional 10.58 million gallons.

Project Scope
The services provided by NTH included full civil site design encompassing:
  • Site layout with vehicle simulations for ingress/egress through the site
  • Demolition plan for removal/abandonment of existing site utilities
  • Soil erosion and sedimentation control plan
  • Grading plan including pavement and gravel drainage design
  • Storm and sanitary sewer design including: Hydrologic analysis; storm sewer design including underground detention system sizing and design; sanitary forcemain design including sanitary lift station design, oil/water separator sizing and design and existing sanitary sewer tap design
  • Due-care perforated collector system design
  • Truck weigh scale installation design
  • Geotechnical Engineering for tank and piping foundations

These design services included reviewing existing site topographical surveys, geotechnical reports, environmental assessments, and historical engineering plans in addition to performing geophysical and field investigation surveys to confirm actual conditions, verify assumptions used for design, and assist in the construction of the site infrastructure.

NTH used the as-built information to prepare construction plans and specifications to make the design plan a reality.

In addition to these design services, NTH facilitated the permitting process with various regulating agencies to obtain the necessary permits for the design and construction of the terminal including:
  • City of Detroit
  • Detroit Water and Sewer Department Sanitary   Sewer Tap
  • City of Detroit Right of Way Authorization
  • Wayne County Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control
