NTH Consultants, Ltd (NTH) was retained by Economic Development Corporation of
the City of Detroit (EDC) to act as EDC’s project manager and provide environmental
consulting services and supplemental air monitoring during the asbestos and
hazardous materials abatement and demolition of the vacant Tiger Stadium.

Environmental Consulting and Demolition Services

NTH provided EDC with the following services:
  • Reviewed contractor work plans for abatement and demolition activities for compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Made unannounced site visits at least twice a week during the duration of the abatement and demolition project to monitor abatement/removal and demolition activities, as well as, assist the owner/project team with environmental compliance issues.
  • Reviewed air-monitoring data collected by the contractors’ representatives during asbestos abatement and demolition activities. Asbestos, cadmium, lead and particulate air monitoring was performed during demolition activities.
  • Performed supplemental/verification air monitoring during asbestos abatement and demolition activities and compared results with the contractors’ representatives’ data.
  • Obtained and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) generator identification number, which was required for offsite disposal of certain hazardous waste.
  • Conducted a final walk-through of the stadium with contractor’s representatives and developed a “punch list” of missed or pending items.
  • Participated in project meetings and developed agendas and minutes for each meeting.
Under NTH’s oversight, the asbestos and hazardous abatement and demolition work
was performed satisfactorily and in general accordance with the contractors’ work
plans. No significant non-compliance issues were noted. The results of the clearance
and demolition air monitoring did not identify any exceedances over the applicable
regulatory guidelines.
