NTH is Making Our Waterways More Accessible
Picture
Sustainable water-based economic development is imperative for our Great Lakes region – responsible development can reclaim access to our water for both conservation and recreational opportunities.

NTH’s vision is to bring people and water together responsibly, protecting our water resources and restoring our lakes, shorelines, and waterways. NTH’s Water Resource Team has been providing sustainable, cost-effective, low-impact solutions for reclaiming and stabilizing our shorelines for decades.

Our experience with designing a wide variety of shoreline restoration systems and rehabilitating maritime, riverine, and riparian structures, affords NTH a unique perspective that allows us to quickly ascertain the critical project elements and pursue value-added solutions. NTH has served both public and private clients in providing critical engineering services on several award-winning shoreline and waterway projects that have helped transform our region’s industrial legacy into accessible, sustainable interaction between the public and their water.
NTH AWARD-WINNING PROJECTS IMPROVE ACCESS TO OUR WATERWAYS
Re-Engineering the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge Boat Dock & Fishing Pier
ACEC MI: Award of Merit for Engineering

The Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge was created to protect the Detroit River shoreline. A dock/fishing pier were part of the design but bids for construction were above budget. NTH re-engineered to eliminate underwater construction efforts, creating a design that was easier to build, able meet schedule restrictions, and saved $1 million.

The Mission to Save Humbug Marsh
ACEC MI: Award of Merit for Engineering

NTH provided engineering services to help preserve the 400 acres of trees, marsh, water, and animal life. These services included design and construction of wheelchair accessible nature trails made from recycled materials, construction of an educational lookout shelter, and construction of a pedestrian bridge. NTH helped to preserve the sensitive marsh and woodlands in order to provide future generations the opportunity to experience the river’s natural habitat.
Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority Public Dock & Terminal
ACEC MI: Engineering Honorable Conceptor Award

The DWCPA Public Dock and Terminal is Detroit’s front door to the international maritime community. NTH’s adaptive re-use of this underutilized portion of the shoreline ties together the Detroit Riverwalk through the redevelopment of Detroit’s waterfront through use of an onshore wharf, an offshore wharf, and many other shoreline restoration features.
