Spring is here and it is once again time to enjoy your time out on the trails around the City of Lansing. In support of the 16-mile pathway, NTH has recently completed slope repairs to restore the riverfront and provide safe and friendly repairs to various areas that were in need of help. Many of the repairs were completed near the end of 2020 and you may have missed them; now is your time to get out there and check them out.
Part of the attractiveness of the Trail is its close proximity to the Grand and Red Cedar Rivers. However, that same beauty means that the erosive powers of the River are at time just a few feet from the trail. Much of the River Trail was established more than 30 years ago and Mother Nature has been slowly reclaiming parts of the trail. Riverbanks are slowly washed away and eventually the slopes start to slide into the river.
NTH explored and modeled the conditions at various locations of failure and developed unique designs that restored the riverbank to its previous condition and provided for soft and hard protections to retain that condition for years to come. We focused on retaining the natural beauty of the river by including natural materials and features where possible and by replacing vegetation from native flowers to trees to support the stability of the riverbanks and keep the River Trail a splendid piece of nature right in the heart of the City.
